The Donelson Christian Academy (DCA) elementary and performing arts addition is a thoughtfully designed expansion that addresses the school’s growing needs while enhancing its arts program. The project focused on rebuilding and expanding the campus after tornado damage, meeting an accelerated timeline for minimal disruption during the school year and incorporating a new theater. A vertical expansion was utilized to maximize site efficiency, with the new auditorium creatively inserted on the second floor, and the school entrance and lobby were reoriented to improve flow and functionality.
Innovative features of the addition include a sloped-floor auditorium with large performance stage and wing space designed for a variety of performance types, audio-visual systems and lighting rigging, providing a highly customized space for performances. A new servery and kitchen were added to enhance the cafeteria’s food service. The design also prioritizes natural light, classrooms, corridors, and the lobby with daylight, creating a bright and welcoming environment. The addition is seamlessly connected to the existing school, facilitating a cohesive integration of new and old spaces. The project successfully balances academic, performing arts and community needs within a creative, efficient and sustainable framework.
