Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown’s expansion reimagines an aging hospital into a cohesive, modern campus that enhances both critical care capacity and the patient experience. Spanning nearly 100,000 square feet, the project introduces new ICU and oncology environments, adds 43 ICU beds, and renovates 68 patient rooms across three floors.

The design blends new construction with existing patient wings, an effort that defines the project. Two new floors rise above the original structure, connected by a striking black curtain wall that brings natural light into patient spaces. A full exterior repaint and enlarged patient room windows further unify the campus and reinforce a healing-focused environment.

Inside, the design establishes a consistent, contemporary language across both new and renovated areas, overcoming the challenges of an older structure. Patient rooms, now approximately 2.5 times larger, improve comfort and flexibility for both patients and care teams. Distinctive headwalls featuring nature-based imagery create a calming atmosphere while maintaining clinical performance, and were carefully integrated into both new and existing rooms to provide continuity.

Flexibility and innovation were key throughout the project. Midway through design, a planned ICU wing was converted into an oncology unit, prompting the integration of new patient showers and specialized support spaces. This shift also led to the development of an integrated nurse server and signage system replacing temporary solutions with a clean, durable design that improves communication and patient care.

Efficient, streamlined footwall systems consolidate telehealth, technology and clinical storage into a single, cohesive unit, enhancing both workflow and the patient experience. Additionally, the use of virtual reality (VR) mockups allowed staff to engage with the design before construction, strengthening collaboration and decision-making.

Constructed within an active hospital, the project was carefully phased floor by floor, while major structural reinforcements, vertical expansions and system upgrades were completed behind the scenes. The result is a unified, forward-thinking healthcare environment that positions Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown to better serve its community for years to come.
