ESa, in partnership with HDR, was selected by STREAM (State of TN Real Estate Asset Management) to design a new, state-of-the-art public health laboratory facility funded by an APRA (Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement) grant. Located at the corner of Ellington Parkway and Hart Lane, the complex is owned by the TN Department of General Services and hosts the R.S. Gass State Lab Replacement Facility, which will be utilized by the TN Department of Health.
The new laboratory complex will occupy seven buildable acres, with the facility itself covering approximately 180,000 gross square feet. It will house specialized lab spaces, administrative areas, educational labs and classrooms, warehouse, boat storage and a mechanical penthouse. Additional features will include tiered surface parking and landscaping elements.
The design team has worked closely together, with HDR leading the lab space design and overall concept, while ESa takes the role of managing architect and core and shell designer, combining their expertise to create a functional and efficient facility.
Key Features & Considerations
- Site Development: The project will include necessary site improvements, such as utilities, parking, and both vehicular and pedestrian circulation. The design will also consider the protected stream and wetland area that serves as a habitat for the Streamside Salamander, integrating these environmental features into the overall plan.
- Building & Lab Design: The facility will feature an open lab concept, using industry-standard bay sizing to provide flexibility and efficiency. The design will incorporate abundant glass to bring natural light into the spaces, enhancing the work environment.
- Specialized Spaces: A BSL-3 lab will be included, supporting the department’s important work in handling high-risk pathogens. The building will also provide educational labs and classrooms for training and professional development.
- Outdoor Spaces: To connect the building to its natural surroundings, the design will include outdoor terraces and roof balconies for employees and visitors to enjoy. A pedestrian bridge will link the parking lot to the building’s entry, improving circulation and accessibility.
- Sustainability: The design will follow Tennessee’s sustainability standards, incorporating energy-efficient systems and materials to reduce the environmental impact while creating an optimal environment for staff and clients.
This modern public health laboratory will provide a cutting-edge environment for research and public health services, supporting the Tennessee Department of Health’s mission to improve the well-being of the state’s population.
