A multi-phased expansion and renovation increases services and capacity, while establishing a contemporary face for the hospital in the community. The scope of the central tower project includes a new two-story lobby serving as a central wayfinding element with outpatient registration area, a nearby chapel and an admitting area renovation. Upper levels include a mother-baby post-partum unit with 10 beds, an ICU with 22 beds and shelled space on multiple levels, allowing for bed and ancillary space expansion to meet future demand. Additional renovation and expansion work was also completed on the adjacent children’s hospital.

An updated façade and drop-off zone at the main entrance increase ease of access for visitors and foster a welcoming environment. Using a design-assist program, the design team was involved from the onset of the project and engaged early in the process with the general contractor and all key sub-contractors. This process helped streamline design decisions, due diligence and kept aspects of the budget on track. The results yielded a contemporary environment with improved wayfinding and capabilities to serve the San Antonio area.
