The new two-story emergency department at Wellstar’s Kennestone Hospital contains 166 beds and is designed to support up to 200,000 visits per year, making it the busiest ED in the State of Georgia and one of the largest EDs in the country.

A 12-bed behavioral health ED on the second floor features eight adult and four pediatric private rooms, both types organized into separate pods to avoid the co-mingling of adults and children. The unit includes all private rooms, full anti-ligature protection, day room space, shower facilities and secure intake areas to allow agitated patients to de-escalate before entering the unit. An adjacent six-bed ED allows the behavioral health unit to flex according to community needs.

A 12-bed trauma pod, which includes five large trauma rooms and seven resuscitation rooms, is located on the first floor with dedicated access from the ambulance entrance. Each of the trauma rooms accommodates in-room imaging and three of the trauma rooms have a direct connection to a CT for immediate access.

The pediatric ED includes two dedicated high acuity patient rooms with their own ambulance entrance. Four additional high acuity rooms are also located on the second floor.

In addition, the ED features a 16-bed pediatric ED, new rooftop helipad, covered ambulance parking for approximately 14 vehicles and 200 parking spaces. This project was designed in collaboration with Jon Huddy of Huddy Healthcare Solutions.
