The owner of this retirement facility wanted the assisted living/memory complex to reflect the tradition and elegance typically found in its upscale community so that residents of the complex can make an easy transition from their homes. Guided by that premise, the traditional design approach relates to the architectural vernacular of the immediate area.

The elevated suburban site looks down upon the city’s skyline, which is maximized with generous windowed views. Meanwhile, the English Manor influence of the residence is evident in the extensive use of wood-paneled wainscoting, mouldings, columns, and trim. Two-sided, stone-surround fireplaces welcome residents in the lobby reception area and main parlors. Arched transoms over the generous windows of the lobby, conservatory, skyline room, and dining room emphasize the high-coffered ceilings. A covered terrace with columns also allows outdoor dining when weather permits.

Of the 110 residences, 17 are secured memory-enhanced units in a separate, attached building. Among its services, The Cumberland at Green Hills provides a physical therapy suite, beauty salon, multipurpose room, game room, billiards room, library, ice cream parlor, tea room, activity room, and private dining.
