ESa provided programming, architecture and interior design services for LaGrange College’s newest science facility, Ida Callaway Hudson Lab Sciences Building, and the renovation of the existing Cason J. Callaway Science Building. Located adjacent to the existing facility, the new approximately 40,000 square foot building is laboratory-focused. It provides Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and general teaching spaces for primarily undergraduate students. The Callaway Science Building is being updated and renovated to provide additional classroom, lab space and faculty/departmental administrative offices and meeting spaces for Physics and Mathematics. Both buildings demonstrate the concept of “science on display,” with all labs designed to be highly visible from public spaces to promote engagement and interaction.
The new building is linear and set back from the street to allow space for a building entrance and courtyard in keeping with several smaller quadrangles located throughout campus. Strategically located along indoor and outdoor circulation routes, informal spaces help foster social interaction between students and faculty. Serving as a gateway to campus with its location at a major intersection, the structure expresses the importance of the sciences to LaGrange College, the local community and the modern world.
