The Trinity Medical Center West, five-story addition, creates a new face for the existing hospital, while adding 88 patient beds, and maintaining uninterrupted access to the campus’ medical office building and emergency department. The main goals for this expansion and renovation was to consolidate patient beds and surgery services, with the addition of a new surgical suite and an adjacent 16-bed progressive care unit on the third floor. The first floor created a new main entry and patient discharge area with space for diagnostics, pre-admitting testing and support services.

The fourth and fifth floors each consist of 36-bed patient care units with standardized universal patient rooms and same-handed layout. This design accommodates differing acuity levels, while encouraging increased patient safety and reduced staff error. In-board toilets reduce travel distance from the bed to bathroom, and the orientation of the headwall offers patients better outdoor views without limiting staff visibility. Med/surg beds are sized to support future intensive care unit (ICU) functions and nurses’ stations utilize modular casework for easy replacement and reconfiguration.

Built in the early 1960s, the hospital underwent numerous past additions. Inconsistent floor heights contributed to a main design challenge: accommodating both a grand entry lobby and floor-to-floor connectivity. After conducting multiple studies on the flow of patients, visitors and materials, the design team created an interstitial space for electrical and mechanic services on the second floor, which allowed for both a 22-foot-tall grand lobby and floor-to-floor connectivity beginning at the new surgical addition on the third floor.
