The Kindred Healthcare Knoxville Rehabilitation Hospital, two-story 57-bed rehabilitation facility reflects the prototypical design of other healthcare facilities in the Kindred system and is shelled for a future interior build-out, enabling it to expand up to 70 beds to meet future market needs.
A central project challenge was accommodating the need for future growth, while comfortably addressing the space needs of the first 57 beds. The shell space of the efficient, flexible layout will eventually house added beds and other services. To address the future while maintaining functionality, the facility also offers such multi-use spaces as a staff classroom and group spaces that will flex to accommodate future growth.
A spacious physical therapy gym is designed to provide spaces for occupational, physical and speech therapy. Contained within the gym is a typical residential kitchen for relearning and adjusting to daily-life skills. The outdoor therapy courtyard is a focal point to train patients on interacting with real world obstacles with the support of staff. This space is also recreational in nature in assisting with improving motor skills in providing spaces for various games, such as bocce ball, chipping / putting green and pickle ball.
Contained within the rehabilitation hospital is a 12-bed brain injury wing for providing stroke and other brain injury patients with the more specialized therapy they need for recovery.
