Renovation and expansion of the four-story, assisted living facility expands services while maintaining visual harmony with the original design. Two floors were converted into memory care space, and a new dining room and screened rooftop patio were added. The existing dining room and outdoor patio were updated, as were therapy and café spaces. Low existing floor-to-ceiling heights and the conversion of existing apartments to new common areas (dining, kitchen, living room and multi-purpose spaces) required creative solutions. Ceiling soffits were designed that allowed for maximum ceiling height in the new common spaces, while accommodating the building’s upgraded mechanical systems.
Another challenge was the main lobby’s existing café. Small and not visible from the front entry, the café wasn’t popular with residents. The owner wanted this space to be more inviting. The design solution was to extend the café and create a decorative entry into the larger space. The extended bar top now seats four residents, and there is additional café and lounge seating throughout. Adding televisions and integrating the existing piano provides a variety of entertainment options for residents in the casual dining space.
Color and floor material changes assist in wayfinding for memory care residents. A warm neutral color palette includes blue, green and terracotta.
