Celebrating Dick Miller: A legacy of leadership, design and impact
Fifty-nine years — and still going strong.
This year, we’re celebrating an extraordinary milestone for chairman emeritus Richard “Dick” Miller, whose legacy continues to shape not only our firm but the broader architecture and healthcare design communities. Adding to an already remarkable list of achievements, Dick was recently awarded an honorary Doctor of the University degree from Belmont University during its Spring 2026 commencement ceremonies at the Curb Event Center. He was recognized alongside fellow honorees Brad Paisley and Kimberly Williams-Paisley.
Honorary degrees have long served as a way for universities to recognize individuals who embody excellence, leadership and service. Belmont’s president Greg Jones captured this perfectly, noting that this year’s honorees “represent the very best of what Belmont hopes to inspire in its graduates: a life marked by excellence, generosity and a commitment to something larger than themselves.” That sentiment couldn’t be more fitting for Dick.
A veteran architect, lecturer and author, Dick has spent nearly six decades helping to shape healthcare design across the country. Since joining the firm as a project architect, rising to president in 1973 and now serving as chairman emeritus, his leadership and vision have left an enduring mark on ESa and the industry as a whole. His work has been recognized nationally, earning him a place among the “25 Most Influential in Healthcare Design” and reflects a lifelong commitment to innovation, patient-focused care and thoughtful design.
Across Nashville and beyond, Dick’s influence can be seen in countless hospitals and healthcare facilities that prioritize both function and humanity. But his legacy extends far beyond the built environment. Through mentorship, leadership and deep community involvement, he has guided generations of architects and designers, shaping not only careers but the culture of our profession. And while his professional accomplishments are extraordinary, it’s Dick’s presence — his stories, his spirit and his unwavering dedication — that truly define what makes this place special. Simply put, ESa wouldn’t be the same without him.
From landmark projects to lifelong mentorship, from industry recognition to this latest honor from Belmont, Dick’s career is a testament to what it means to lead with integrity, humility and purpose.
Congratulations, Dick, on this well-deserved recognition, and cheers to 59 incredible years.
